With so many restaurant hosts/coffee shop servers having problems with pronouncing my name correctly, I tried calling myself Jong instead of JongMan. I ended up being called John...

I'm at the verge of become a John.

  • Pro: It's hella easier.
  • Con: It's so common.
  • Pro: But actually I don't personally know many Johns. I know tons of Chris-s and Mikes, but no Johns, except John Simon :-)

Edit) Or I could just call myself JM... hmm...

First impressions on System76 Starling 3

I got a system76 Starling 3 netbook as a birthday gift for myself. For my occasional day out in coffee shops or library, I was using a Panasonic Let's Note R6 which I got for my last year of school -- which is surprisingly lightweight and sturdy, and has a 6 hour battery life. I had two problems with R6: a. it was fanless and it becomes annoyingly hot after 30 minutes of usage. b. it doesn't really run Linux well. While I tried to ease the problem on both fronts, I became lazy and said shit I can just buy one. So here comes system76.

System76 ships a whole set of desktops, laptops and servers which run Ubuntu. Ubuntu comes preloaded on the box; they have support for all drivers and stuff. Having switched over to desktop linux an year ago, this was a blessing.

I laid my hands on it Friday and been playing with it.

Pros

  • It's really well built: not flimsy at all, unlike many netbooks I played with in Best Buy.
  • Everything works perfectly in Ubuntu; volumes, wireless, screen brightness.
  • The keyboard is quite pleasant to type on; much better than Panasonic, or my work keyboard (which is a standard HP keyboard). I like the isolated keys; less mistyping.
  • It's incredibly snappy. I have a nettop at home (which uses an Atom too) hooked up with my LCD TV at home; and surfing the web with IE8 over there makes me want to die after 10 minutes. Here, Chrome doesn't feel much different than running it from my desktop, which runs quad-core nehalem.

Cons

  • The bezel is kind of thick for a small laptop -- it more look like a toy laptop if the screen is turned off. I would appreciate a larger LCD even if the dot pitch goes up.
  • The hinge only opens up a little bit more than 90 degrees -- which really annoys me. When I'm sitting on a sofa and the netbook is on my lap, it really needs to open up more for me to see it from above. Meh.
  • The touchpad only has a single button, which is used for both left and right clicks. So it doesn't register clicks in the middle. Another really annoying factor. I would much more appreciate if I could alternate left and right clicks without moving my finger a lot.
  • When typing, it's really easy to touch the touchpad accidentally to make it click: annoying as hell! Installing fscp and disabling tap-to-click solved the problem.

Other things

What I realized when I was playing with this netbook is how my computer usage changed in recent years. Until two or three years ago, when I was still using desktop windows, setting up a new machine was a real pain. I needed to go and download the right versions of editors, mp3 player, wordprocessor, spread sheets and IM/FTP/SSH clients, pdf readers, and so on. Now, I use the web for most of my stuff (I don't use Word or Excel anymore -- I just try to use Markdown or Google spreadsheet, and turn to latex and python if anything gets serious), and Ubuntu is so easy to set up. Ubuntu comes preloaded with most of the things I need in the first place. So after several apt-gets, I checked out my private repository and symlinked my .rc files, and I was like 90% up to speed within an hour (50 minutes of it spent checking out my SVN repo).

Cheers to Ubuntu.

All in all, I think I'll enjoy using it. Gonna keep you posted.

Branch Prediction Builtins in GCC

zeromq 소스 보다가

if (unlikely (rc < 0)) {

이런 라인을 발견. 이건 뭔가 하고 뒤져보니 __builtin_expect 가 나온다. 이 페이지 에 따르면

You may use __builtin_expect to provide the compiler with branch prediction information. In general, you should prefer to use actual profile feedback for this (-fprofile-arcs), as programmers are notoriously bad at predicting how their programs actually perform. However, there are applications in which this data is hard to collect.

심심해서 zeromq guide 를 보고 있는데

Now this looks too simple to be realistic, but a ØMQ socket is what you get when you take a normal TCP socket, inject it with a mix of radioactive isotopes stolen from a secret Soviet atomic research project, bombard it with 1950-era cosmic rays, and put it into the hands of a drug-addled comic book author with a badly-disguised fetish for bulging muscles clad in spandex. Yes, ØMQ sockets are the world-saving superheros of the networking world.

Dude, calm down....
